Saturday saw another great showcase of independent Michigan artists at the Shadow Art Fair. The 12 hour hipsterific event gathered hundreds of folks at Corner Brewery for indie art, music, beer and to raise money for the “Shadow Grant Fund” which gives cash to a local artist to help launch their project.

I got to Corner and as soon as I walked inside I started sweating profusely. There was no air conditioner inside and hundreds of people all over the place, so I went out back to catch some air and grab a beer within minutes of getting there. The beer garden was packed and was almost a separate event completely from what was going on inside. As soon as I grabbed my beer I headed back in to chat with some vendors. I ran into our local foodie crusader, Stefanie Stauffer who had some home grown salsa for sale and I also talked with several people who make prints. That was the big theme this year (if there ever is a theme) prints. Most of the vendors made prints or hand made jewelery.

I go to SAF every year and every year I find something really unique and fun. In year’s past it’s been t-shirts, photos and/or man accessories (I bought a messenger bag once made out of recycled sail boat sails) but this year I opted to purchase a print of the Ypsilanti water tower.

The event was great, the Shadow Brew beer was really good, sour and good and I got to leave with a really cool piece for the apartment, and I thought I saw the Guinness people  there witnessing a new record with the most fixed gear bikes in one place at one time…

Did you go? Who was your favorite vendor?

Last night we ventured over to the Riverside Arts Center for a benefit event called Ypsi Style. It was a fashion show highlighting some of the area’s best boutiques and local fashionistas.

While we didn’t get there early enough for a prime photography seating, I did get some cool shots of some of the pieces in the gallery. I take that back, we did get there early enough, but we were stuffing our faces with goodies from Aubree’s, Beezy’s, Haab’s and Terry Bakery and then of course washed it all down with some really good red wine. We ran into some our friends from Eleven West and Thomas Blondi Salons who helped with hair and make up and before you knew it, we missed our chance at front row seats. Sorry.

The show was nicely done and had an eclectic array of fashions from Mix, Puffer Red’s, Apple Annie’s, Fantasy Attic, Lezlie Anne Designs, Rita’s and Studio Glamour. Everything and everyone looked great. However, the highlight of the show was not a model or flashy dress, it was first time emcee, Mayor Schreiber. He had fun with the models and the crowd and created a lot of interaction. He did a great job of handling frequent downtime and he even walked the run way!

All in all it was a nice event for a good cause. If you haven’t been to the Riverside Arts Center, check it out. It’s a cool venue and I look forward to going back.

The iSPY Team got together for our monthly staff meeting tonight. We welcomed some new members, shared a few laughs and talked about taking over the world…one band at a time. We hope you enjoy June’s issue as much as we did making it!

The iSPY team joined the rest of the community for Ypsi P.R.I.D.E. Day this past Saturday. We helped clean up Peninsular Park with a group from the Ypsi/A2 Chamber and the entire EMU Men’s Basketball team. Afterwards, we spent some time relaxing, enjoying the great day with a community picnic. It was such a great event, so glad we were able to do our part. Did you participate? If so, tell us where and upload your photo!
